Content creation has become a complicated term lately. While it can mean anything from blogging to vlogging, and pretty much anything in between, content writing remains a mainstay. And in the post-Chat GPT era, creating content has got both easier and more challenging.

This post, for the record is actually written by a real human (I know, right?) but with some AI enhanced elements thrown in.

Whether you’re managing a business and you’re looking to manage the content on your site for SEO or other marketing, or if you’re looking to become a professional content writer, here is a quick run down about how easy/hard it is to get started content writing in the AI era.

Is content writing still in demand?

Yes, content writing is more in demand than ever. With the ease in ability to setup a business online, and the competitive nature of online business, written content remains a key skill. And yes humans writers are still important to the whole process.

Generally, people are hiring for content writers in:

  • SEO content writing
  • Thought leadership articles for industry publications, social media etc
  • Video script planning and writing
  • Social media content creation
  • Technical writing
  • Specialist or niche content writing

However, due to the fact that a lot of people use AI tools, the competition for high paying jobs is higher than ever. But this also means that hiring a content writing pro is easier than ever, which is good news for business owners.

To temper your expectations though, content these days is often based on output from an AI. This usually means that a Chat GPT or Gemini article is the starting point for a lot of the content you’re dealing with, and ‘humanising’ the content is the task at hand.

Content writing vs ‘humanising’ content

Even though LLMs such as ChatGPT have become very good at creating a blog post on whatever subject you want, they do still generate quite generic content. There are ways around this, such as training your AI tool to make content in the voice you want – but the truth is that in 2025 at least, you’ll still need to humanise content.

This often means that business managers want humans to edit AI articles to make them read like a human wrote them. That might mean:

  • Removing commonly used cliches and phrasing
  • Improving the structure and layout of the article
  • Fixing overly technical phrasing or jargon

In fact for most content writers starting out these days, experience of using LLMs, creating a good prompt and editing for a human voice is an important skill.

Using AI as a content writer

While some businesses do frown upon and state specifically that they don’t want AI used in their content, others embrace it and even encourage it. These are typically the businesses that are looking for a consistent output and are aware that AI can enhance the skills of the content writers, not dilute their message.

Some good tools for AI content writing include:

  • LLMs (Chat GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek etc) – These are the bread and butter of AI content creation but they do need training. Optimising your prompts will help.
  • Surfer SEO – A growing tool for content creators, Surfer helps to optimise your articles for search, but also has an AI element to automatically write and edit your content.
  • Zinggit – Super useful for ideation, this voice note to text app takes your vocal input or webinar notes and turns them into a solid first draft article.
  • Quillbot – A clever tool that is designed to ‘humanise’ your content. Not 100% accurate but worth checking out.
  • AI workflow tools (copy.ai, Jasper, Rytr etc) – These were some of the earliest AI writing tools but have become more focused on automating the workflow around content creation. Input in, content out.

How to get clients as a content writer

Getting started is always the hardest part of any new venture, and finding clients is still the biggest challenge. To find content writing clients, you’ll need to use a variety of platforms such as:

  • Job boards – Indeed, CV Library etc
  • Freelancer platforms – Upwork, Fiverr etc, while these are congested they do still offer opportunities
  • Linkedin – Being visible on Linkedin is one of the best ways of attracting your first potential clients
  • Reddit – Another useful resource if you browse the freelance and for hire subs
  • Networking and referrals – Ask around your network and you never know what you might find.

Businesses – the age old case of hiring a writer vs AI tools

Content is still king – and having a sustainable flow of content creation is important for a thriving business. Especially one that relies on organic traffic.

As such, a mix of human writers and AI tools can help to maximise your business content strategy. Humans work best when they have the right tools for the job. And, right now, AI content is still very useful but not the finished article.

In short: human content writers are still the best choice. But let them use AI tools for the best results….
